Location: Beaverdam, VA

Weather: 46 degrees, sunny, no wind, 51% humidity

Cover: Grass, woods, some briars

Length: about 407 yds

Age: 4 hrs

Tracklayer: Kelly

Video: None. My videographer was checking out a new swamp.

Great start and first turn. Midway down the second leg while still in grass Saber stopped. She turned around and stared at me for no reason I can figure out. I let her look around for a minute and asked her to return to work. She went back to work for a few steps and started eating grass. It was very un-Saber like. I asked her to get back to work and she did. Once she entered the woods and found the first article she seemed to perk back up a little. No food in articles, but I did reward her at each article.

All article indications were good. Her briar navigation and resilience was good, as was her multiple detangles.

She tracked very precisely in the woods. She did have to exit through briars and ended up going to the right of where I did probably because it was easier. It was interesting because when she got out of the woods she sent left back to where I exited and picked the track back up. She did miss the last turn. I stopped and waited for her to pick it back up. She was just going to track across the field. She finished fine.

I feel like she is lacking her usual enthuisam.

Hopefully it will return soon! I love the ‘find the easy path out’ and then relocate the track. Smart dogs do that. I suspect (will never know) that they are still in contact with the scent when they do that…because they virtually always turn towards the track upon exiting the rough stuff. Since she missed A turn, maybe do an 8 turn stairstep next…if you were to use the big field you could probably put at least one of those turns in the woods.
